It seems that when ordering my pc some weeks ago there was misunderstanding
between myself and the co. who sent me the pc. Thinking that a Tseng Labs
ET4000 card was being sent along with the pc, all seemed well. Well, it turns
out they sent me the Enhanced VGA et4000 local bus (I did know it was local

modegen.txt, modeDB.txt, and the card manual more closely it became clear that
this card has the clock generator chip. Now, this clock generator is mentioned
as being a problem because the clock dots continually chang and this, of course
causes problems with using X. I suppose this an insurmountable problem because
one has to have access to program source to be able to use the card effective-
ly, right?

When my mistake in the ordering became fully realized, a call to the co. was
placed and, after some discussion, he agreed to send me a 2-the-MAX VGA 4000
card. We agreed that after trying out the other card I could send back the one
not needed and the difference would be credited to me, if there is any.

Is it hopeless to try to use the local bus card with the clock generator or
woould I be better off just using the 2-the-MAX card? What are the differences
in performance with the local bus with X and without local bus? Is it enough
to matter?

One more thing :-), the modegen.txt file mentions running 'startx.notcp 2>
clocks.X. After doing this, all that happens is that a file is produced that
says "startx.notcp: command not found". Is this because of this card and X
not recognizing it?

Sigh!  Yet another ME TOO!  I am having the same problem with X386-S3-0.2b.
All ideas (even guesses at this point) welcome.

So, run with a larger screen.  You should be able to run 720x480 using the
28MHz dot clock without too much trouble on almost any VGA monitor.  I'm running
a little larger than that on my NEC-3D monitor using the same dot clock.

I thought that the X Window System servers and window managers
used integer arithmatic. Therefore, I would think that
an additional floating point unit wouldn;t make a bit
of difference.

it's very different, but much faster and generally considered

This should be in a FAQ if it is not already. You have to re-run the
mkfontdir program on these directories. Don't ask me, i didn't even
bother finding out why, but i assume something is screwed up in the SLS
distribution.

If the selection binary is run in the foreground, the stuff that
should be pasted to whatever vc you are using will instead be output
in the vc that selection is running in.  Naturally, nothing gets
output anywhere if selection is run in tha background, as in nomally
is.  I've taken a good look at the code, and I have no idea why it
broke.

Recently I went from the *very* basic SLS setup (a1..a4 disks) to the
full base system (a1..c4), and have had nothing but problems since then.
The adduser/deluser commands seem to have disappeared, to be replaced (I
presume) by useradd/userdel etc, which i can't seem to get to work -so
either I'm thick (probably), or the software is a bit buggy (possibly).
When I add a new user, with adduser (eg adduser -u 100 -g 6 -d
/home/abutler abutler) I can't log on with that user, even though I
change the password. Looking at /etc/passwd, there is a '*' in the
password field, which (I think) indicates that that usercode can't be
used to log in, which is odd as I'd just changed the password.

Also, when I log in as root (or try to as anyone else), 'no shadow
password for 'root' on 'tty1' ' is displayed.

I tried looking at any references to shadow/login/useradd etc, but I'm
still stumped.

*Any* help on this would be much appreciated.

  I would be very surprised if Linux could be made to read Mac 400k or
800k floppies, as the low-level layout of the disks is different, and
I don't think PC hardware could read it.  The 1440k floppies would be
the only possibility.  (Conceivably, I suppose, the SCSI drivers could
be convinced to understand Mac SCSI drives, but I think they'd have to
be significantly overhauled, as of course the Mac scheme for drive
partitioning is different.)

  The Mac HFS is bizarre, though, what with each file having a
resource- and a data-fork, not to mention the Finder information, and
you'd have to come up with some standard mapping onto a Unixy way of
doing things.  (There are at least three such standard mappings, I
believe: AppleSingle, AppleDouble, and CAP.)  I think the Mac HFS is
mostly documented in Inside Macintosh volume 4, probably with some
extensions in volume 6.

  So it's at least conceivable, though I doubt it's high on anybody's
list of priorities.  One other option is to use Apple File Exchange on
the Mac side to transfer everything to MS-DOS format disks, which
Linux can then of course read.  I don't know if this would be any
faster than uploading them, though.

 I had that problem. It went away when I reinstalled fonts and changed
 permission to 755. Now S3 X-server works fine with twm but I can't
 make olvwm work - keep getting the message "can't open display :0" :(

I am still (unsuccessfully) trying to get X up and running.  I have run into
many new problems, which I will outline here with the hope that someone will
know a simple solution to them.

I am running on a 486DX/33, 8MB RAM, 55MB Linux partition, ATI VGA Wonder/XL,
and an InPort mouse (through the XL).  I am using a pretty much standard
Xconfig file, set up to do the normal 640x480 clocks.  A unmodified version of
SLS Linux 0.98.pl1-37 is what I use.

I run X with the command "startx 1>stdout 2>stderr" as root.  The display goes
to random garbage while it loads, then the crossweave pattern appears and the
mouse X cursor appears.  Then it stops.  The mouse will not move the cursor (at
all), and the machine is completely dead.  Ctrl-Alt-Delete does not work.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does nothing.  Typing "sync" causes no activity on the hard
drive.

Rebooting, I examine the remains of this disaster.  The file "stdout" is empty.
The file "stderr" contains:

At one point in time a file called ".xsession-erro" was created with
an error message complaining that "twm:  can't open display "" ", but
that no longer seems to appear...

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get X up and running?   I have a
hypothesis:  twm can't get started, so it quits, and so does X.  Then
one of the more well known bugs of XFree cuts in, and crashes my machine
as X quits.

If anyone has any ideas as to what might be going wrong, or is running on
a similar configuration to mine and would like to send me their Xconfig,
I would appreciate it.  Thanks!

I saw a number of postings about this, and I have an answer!  It relates to
the problem I had with my hard disk, where I would intermittently get an
"HD- timeout" followed by an "HD- controller reset".  When these things
happened, they tended to mess up the files that were being accessed at the
time (and all sorts of bad things happened when it occurred during an efsck).
If I would be running the compiler and get this message, it would persist
until I replaced the corrupted file.  Sometimes, I had to erase the source
file and replace it with a fresh copy (usually coming from a tar archive),
and sometimes I had to replace the cc1 executable.  But it always works
after replacing it.
If you do see these symptoms, I suggest you recompile your kernel with the
"HD-delay" parameter set to some high number... 200 works for me.  I'm not
exactly sure why these things happen or what the HD-DELAY does, but it does
fix the problem.  Hope this helps,
